To commemorate the centuries-long connections between Taiwan and the Netherlands in the anniversary year 2024, we have asked a diverse group of authors to choose an aspect or topic from that shared history. They present these stories, often based on their own earlier articles, to a broad audience in a limited number of words.
The contributions have a diverse nature. Some are more contemplative and cover a more extended period. Others zoom in on a pivotal moment and go into depth. There are also contributions in which the author focuses on sources and shows what they tell us about past connections. We have intentionally embraced this diversity. To make these fascinating stories accessible, we have limited jargon. The introduction briefly overviews the history of relations between Taiwan and the Netherlands and provides context for the various contributions, even for the uninitiated.
